Plot summary
On October 11, 1975, Lorne Michaels arrives at NBC Studios in New York City to prepare the debut of NBC's Saturday Night, ninety minutes before air. The evening is chaotic: the cast swings between hostility and rebellion, the crew is dismissive, and no one is sure yet what kind of show it is. Dick Ebersol warns Michaels that David Tebet has brought network executives from across the country to watch, and that Tebet is ready to fill the slot with an episode of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson instead. John Belushi feels alienated and picks fights, Jim Henson objects to how the writing staff treats his Muppets, the writing staff clashes with censor Joan Carbunkle, Garrett Morris questions his place among comics, and host George Carlin calls the material stupid and embarrassing.
