Plot summary
The Tokugawa regime has crushed the Christian rebellion at Shimabara, and its leader, Amakusa Shirō, comes back from death, renouncing God for abandoning the believers. He receives the power to raise the dead and gathers regret-filled souls into his service: the betrayed wife Hosokawa Gracia, the swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, and the monk Hōzōin Inshun. Yagyū Jūbei, son of Musashi's rival, walks into Musashi's cave looking for a teacher and finds only an empty suit of armor. Jūbei's friend, the young Iga ninja Kirimaru, loses his village when the rival Koga clan massacres it. Shirō's demons then turn toward Edo Castle, where the shogun Tokugawa Ietsuna holds court.
