Plot summary
Doris Lang, the orphaned daughter of a werewolf hunter, is bitten by Count Magnus Lee, a vampire lord, when she trespasses in his domain. Infected by the bite, she hires D, a vampire hunter, to kill the Count and save her from becoming a vampire. While she is in town with D and Dan, her younger brother, Greco Rohman, the mayor's son, offers to help Doris only if he can have her, and she refuses. D asks the town sheriff, Greco's father, and Dr. Ferringo to delay Doris's stay at the local asylum until the Count is dead. That night Rei Ginsei, the Count's servant, and L'Armica, the Count's daughter, attack Doris's farm, and D fends them off, ordering them to leave with a warning for the Count.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Vampire Hunter D (1985)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Vampire Hunter D is credited as one of the earliest anime made for male teenagers and adults rather than for families, and it exploited the new original video animation market because of its violence and its use of European horror mythology, such as the films of Britain's Hammer Film Productions.
- Yoshitaka Amano, who illustrated the original novels, was the OVA's character designer, but director Toyoo Ashida, also the film's animation director, provided alternative designs, and the animators combined elements from both men's work to create the final character designs.
- Vampire Hunter D is considered a flagship title for the US distributor Streamline Pictures, and it was marketed in the United States as "the first animated horror film for adults".
