Trailer

Plot summary

Somewhere in Japan stands the 444th of 666 portals linking this world to the other side, a place called the Forest of Resurrection. Two prisoners break out and cross that forest, where a gang of yakuza is waiting with a kidnapped girl. Prisoner KSC2-303 objects to what the gang has in store for her; an argument turns into a standoff and a shot is fired. The man who falls gets up again, and the people the gang buried in the forest come back with scores to settle. Outnumbered by the dead, the convict and the yakuza fight side by side.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Versus (2000)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Tak Sakaguchi was hired for the lead after director Ryuhei Kitamura saw a gag video featuring him; Kitamura said he hired Sakaguchi for his beautiful smile, while Sakaguchi claims they met in a street fight, where Kitamura asked if he would rather fight in the streets or in his films.
  • Versus was first intended as a video sequel to Kitamura's amateur short Down to Hell, but he decided instead to shoot on film with a budget of $10,000 for a theatrical release.
  • Kitamura's shoot for Versus was planned to last three weeks, but it was extended to seven months because of weather and financial issues.
  • Producers refused to make Versus with Kitamura, telling him an action film was impossible with so little time and money, so he raised the money himself by borrowing from friends and family.
