Plot summary

Nellie O'Malley and her two sisters, Bridget and Jenny, come to Mount Bedford, New York, where their Irish immigrant father has taken work as a servant at the house next door to Grandmary Edwards. Grandmary's granddaughter, Samantha Parkington, defends the girls from Eddie Ryland's bullying, and she and Nellie become friends. Nellie talks about her mother's death and the New York City factory where she once worked; Samantha, whose parents died in a boat accident, teaches her to read. Gardner Edwards, Samantha's uncle, arrives with his fiancée Cornelia Pitt, and the pair plan a July wedding in Mount Bedford. Cornelia, a suffragette, argues with Grandmary over whether women should vote. Samantha agrees to be Cornelia's bridesmaid.
