Plot summary
Maud, who has recently converted to Roman Catholicism, works as a private nurse for the dying in a town on the English coast. Her new patient is Amanda, an American dancer and choreographer who is dying of stage four lymphoma. Amanda is embittered and tells Maud she fears the oblivion that death will bring. Maud becomes convinced that God wants her to save Amanda's soul, and she speaks to Amanda of feeling God's presence at times. The two of them pray together. Amanda's companion Carol visits the house often. Maud asks Carol to stop coming, saying that the flesh distracts Amanda from what matters.
