Plot summary
Charles is seventeen and in high school. Other students bully him over his physical disability, and he finds comfort in taking photographs. He lives with his dying father, Eric, who supports him, and works at a truck stop for Peg, who encourages him. When Mr. Sullivan, his teacher, announces a contest for photographers at school, Charles picks up a flyer and considers entering, though he has no theme in mind. Vicki is eighteen and works as a prostitute; she rents a motel room near the truck stop and comes back between sessions with truck drivers to talk with him. Skid, her pimp, keeps demanding his cut of her money. Vicki spots the contest flyer and asks if Charles will enter, and he says he would need a driver to reach the California lighthouses. She offers to take him.
