Plot summary

Isaac Jorstad returns from America to the house on a Norwegian island where he lived as a child, bringing his pregnant wife, Emma, to claim the property he inherited. Sheriff Renate tells him that his father, Johan, was killed by his mother twenty-five years earlier, and Isaac says his mother is dead and that the house came to him through a will. Renate invites the couple to dinner, where they meet her daughter Astrid, hear about the island's customs and learn of a myth the locals call The Slumbering One. Emma begins to have strange dreams, and the couple disagree about whether to keep the house or go back to America.
