Plot summary
Vladimir Mashkov, a construction foreman in 1980s Moscow, leaves home for groceries and meets a barefoot man in a tattered coat standing on Kalinin Prospekt, who asks passersby to name their planet and shows a device he says moves people through space. Ignoring the stranger's warnings, Mashkov presses a button, and he and Gedevan, a young Georgian violinist, are carried to Pluke, a desert world in the Kin-dza-dza galaxy. Its inhabitants look human, read minds and reduce speech to a handful of words. A hand-held visator marks Mashkov and Gedevan as Patsaks, the lower of two classes. Matches are precious there, water has been turned into fuel, and armed police enforce the ranks, so the two want only to get home.
