Plot summary
On a stormy night the pirate Billy Bones arrives at the Admiral Benbow Inn, where he asks Jim Hawkins to warn him if an old one-legged sailor ever appears. Bones keeps a chest in his room and a treasure map inside it, and a pirate gang led by Blind Pew is watching the inn. When Bones's former shipmate Black Dog comes for the map, the two fight and Black Dog flees. Dr. Livesey treats Bones after a sneezing fit brings a ceiling plank down on him and a stroke follows. Pew then delivers a black spot, a warning that the gang will call at ten. Hawkins takes the map and rides for Squire Trelawney's estate, where he shows it to Trelawney and Livesey.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Return to Treasure Island (1988)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- In August 2022 the film's animated Dr. Livesey became an international internet meme: his confident walk into the Spyglass Inn with Hawkins and Trelawney, set to the phonk track "Why Not" by Ghostface Playa.
- Russia's 2012 law barring films that show smoking or drinking from being screened to minors would have caught Treasure Island, whose pirates drink and smoke repeatedly; a public outcry won an exemption for films of significant historical and cultural value, including this one.
- The live-action song interludes warning against drinking and smoking were added to help meet the deadline for the cartoon and were filmed at night; with about two years allowed for two hours of film, the songs were recorded overnight as the deadline neared.
