Plot summary
Alexandr Petrovich Bochkin trained as a chemist and now manages a dry-cleaning operation in Moscow. The position gives him cover for a sideline: he takes private orders through a speculative enterprise he runs with Margarita Ivanovna, known as Queen Margot. His comfortable arrangement is disturbed by a visit from Yuri Lebedev, a friend from his days at the chemical institute who comes to Moscow from the Siberian city of Dalnegorsk, and by Olga, who travels with him. Rather than admit what he does for a living, Bochkin tells the visitors he is a scientist at work on secret government experiments.
