Plot summary
The documentary looks at a century of African American performers in music and film, from early decades to the present. A host guides viewers through the material, which is divided into segments: dancers, divas, male singers, jazz and swing, rock and soul and hip hop. Among the artists featured are Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Josephine Baker, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis Jr., Dorothy Dandridge, Diana Ross, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson and Little Richard, together with contemporary figures such as Snoop Dogg, Ice T, Quincy Jones, Spike Lee, Russell Simmons and Sean Combs. The host traces the struggles and the triumphs of these singers, dancers and stars of the screen across the decades.
