Plot summary
In a city park, Bill meets Trina, a hungry young woman, and takes her to dinner at a fancy restaurant, where he tells the manager he has no money and makes such a scene that they are allowed to walk out. Learning that she is homeless too, he offers her a place in the ramshackle shanty town where he lives. Their neighbors include Ira, a widowed former preacher, and Flossie, an older woman who drinks and whom Ira hopes to reform. Bill is a wanderer who will not stay in one place for long, and Trina, in love with him, makes no demands that might make him feel trapped. When she wants a new stove, he gets the money by delivering a summons to Fay La Rue, a stage star, who wants him as a playmate.

- When Columbia re-released Man's Castle in 1938, the Hays Office demanded twelve minutes of cuts to win a seal: racy dialogue was removed, a shot of a nude Loretta Young diving into a river was deleted, and the wedding scene was moved from the seventh reel to the first.
- In 2023, Sony Pictures Entertainment restored Man's Castle in 4K at Cineric laboratory, drawing on the original 1933 35mm nitrate negative, a 1938 nitrate dupe negative and a 35mm nitrate print loaned by the BFI National Archive.
