Plot summary
Timothy Borden built Amalgamated Pump from nothing, and now his employees are making demands that could ruin it. His son Tim, who would rather play polo, has lost a major customer. At home on his birthday, Timothy finds only the servants: his wife Martha is out, his daughter Katherine is busy, and nobody has remembered the day. Higgins, the butler, suggests a walk in Central Park, where Timothy falls in with Mary Grey, a young woman without work, and takes her to a nightclub for dinner and dancing. In the morning he wakes with a hangover, a black eye and Mary in a guest room. The reaction she draws from his indifferent household gives him an idea, and he hires her to act as his mistress.

The film was shown to preview audiences with a different, unhappy ending in which Mary leaves the house and walks down Fifth Avenue. Ginger Rogers vacationed in Honolulu after filming, and a new ending was shot once she returned.- Louis Calhern, who plays Dr. Kessler in the finished film, was originally slated to play Tommy Hopkins, a role that went to Cornelius Keefe.
