Plot summary
Siddharth Parashar is a studious Delhi University student who shares a flat with his friends Omi Sharma and Jai Lakhanpal, known as Jomo. Omi and Jomo spend their days in pursuit of fun and women, and both are taken with their neighbor Neha Rajan the moment they see her. Neither manages to win her over. When Neha arrives at their flat to demonstrate washing powder, Omi and Jomo hide, leaving Siddharth to answer the door. The two talk, and they begin seeing each other without the roommates knowing. Siddharth also takes a job at a firm whose manager is Neha's father, which he does not realize. Omi and Jomo scheme to split the couple apart so their own failed attempts stay hidden.

- For a bhajan scene filmed at Kalkaji Mandir with Deepti Naval and Leela Mishra, four thousand villagers arrived to watch, so the production manager bolted the temple's doors and windows; when the unit came out, angry villagers pelted their car with stones.
- Deepti Naval refused to perform her parody of the song "Aaja Aaja" or wear the wig, which led to a heated argument with Sai Paranjpye. Producer Gul Anand brought in a choreographer to help her who had himself been a background dancer in "Aaja Aaja".
- Deepti Naval's washing-powder scene made her a role model for young girls who nicknamed her Miss Chamko, some detergent companies named their brands Chamko, and her character's name Neha became a popular name for babies in the 1980s.
- The film's kidnapping plot may have been drawn from the real kidnapping and murder of two young siblings in late-1970s Delhi.
- Sai Paranjpye was appalled when David Dhawan was announced as director of the Hindi remake, and after PLA Entertainment failed to compensate her she went to the Film Writers Association and then to court; the matter settled out of court with her getting a decent amount.
- Ravi Baswani got the part of Jomo after begging Naseeruddin Shah to take him on as a spot boy and then working on props for Sai Paranjpye's Sparsh; when his name came up at casting, she wrote to him asking for an immediate reply so she could stop scouting.
- In April 2013 a digitally restored Chashme Buddoor opened on 40 screens on the same day as David Dhawan's remake Chashme Baddoor, a first for India, where an original film and its remake were released simultaneously.
- Farooq Sheikh was a non-smoker, so Sai Paranjpye cut his shots the moment he raised a cigarette to his lips.
