Plot summary
Charles Grandet is the pampered son of a Paris millionaire. When his father's losses ruin the family, the boy is sent to the countryside to live with an uncle the Grandets have not spoken to in years. Pere Grandet is the wealthiest man in his province, and he keeps his own household in poverty while setting out to take his nephew's inheritance for himself. Charles arrives penniless and city-bred, and he is immediately drawn to his cousin Eugenie, Grandet's daughter. Her father condemns the romance, and he means to see that Charles gets nothing.
