Roscoe Orman
Biography
Roscoe Orman, born in The Bronx, is an American actor and writer best known for his long run as Gordon Robinson on Sesame Street. While studying at the High School of Art and Design in New York City, he made his stage debut in the 1962 revue If We Grow Up, then spent two years in New Orleans with the Free Southern Theater and helped found Robert Macbeth's New Lafayette Theatre in Harlem, where he acted in and directed plays by Ed Bullins. He also appeared at Joseph Papp's Public Theater in Julius Caesar and Coriolanus and in the Broadway staging of August Wilson's Fences, and he has received two Audelco Theatre Awards. He became the third actor to play Gordon when he joined Sesame Street in 1974. His film credits include the title role in Willie Dynamite (1974), F/X (1986), Striking Distance (1993), The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland (1999), and You Can't Take My Daughter (2020).

First role
Orman made his theatrical debut in 1962 in the topical revue If We Grow Up while he was still a student at New York City's High School of Art and Design.
Early training
In Harlem, Orman helped found Robert Macbeth's New Lafayette Theatre. There he directed and acted in several plays by Ed Bullins, the company's playwright-in-residence.
A first
Orman played Gordon again in one Season 54 episode and one Season 55 episode, making him the first original human cast member to come back to Sesame Street since Season 46.
Behind the camera
Orman's memoir Sesame Street Dad: Evolution of An Actor came out in June 2006, and his children's book Ricky and Mobo followed in September 2007.
