Plot summary
After the death of his wife Ruth, cantor Ben Gottlieb has lost his ability to sing and his faith. He returns to live with his mothers, Meira and Judith. After a bar fight, he runs into Carla Kessler, who taught him music in elementary school. She attends his class for boys and girls getting ready for bar and bat mitzvahs. Carla explains that she always wanted a bat mitzvah, but her communist parents would not allow it when she was 13. Ben agrees to teach her and secures approval for the ceremony from Rabbi Bruce. As they prepare, the two become close.
