Plot summary
The man has decided that he no longer deserves a name, so he does not use one. He is staying in the house of his friend Imogen while she is away, and she telephones to remind him that her dog Rothko needs a walk. Out on the walk, Rothko leads him where the dog chooses rather than where the man intends, taking him to a park, where Rothko kills a duck. Onlookers who see it shout at the man. Rothko then begins to speak to him, taunting him about what has happened.
