Paul Naschy

Biography

Paul Naschy was a Spanish actor and screenwriter who became a leading figure in his country's horror cinema. Born Jacinto Molina Alvarez in Madrid, he broke into movies in the early 1960s with small uncredited parts in pictures such as King of the Vikings (1960) and King of Kings (1961). He scripted Frankenstein's Bloody Terror (1968) and then took the lead himself, as the anguished werewolf Waldermar Daninsky, after Lon Chaney Jr. turned the part down; he returned to the character in many sequels. His other monsters included Dracula, the Mummy, Jack the Ripper and the Devil, and he made his directing debut with Inquisition (1978). Later roles included the title character in School Killer (2001) and a bitter, washed-up horror actor in Rojo sangre (2004). Fangoria inducted him into its Hall of Fame in 2000, and he received Spain's Gold Medal in Fine Arts in 2001.
