Plot summary
Dr. Odo Warnoff leads a group of aliens whose own world is dying, and they plan to conquer the Earth. Their method is human superstition: if they learn what makes legendary creatures so frightening, they can turn that fear against people. Warnoff and his companions occupy the bodies of two dead Earth scientists and use the knowledge those men had. That lets the aliens revive the vampire Count Janos de Mialhoff, the mummy Tao-Tet, Frankenstein's monster and the werewolf Waldemar Daninsky. For guidance they keep a book, The Anthology of the Monsters, written by Professor Ulrich von Farancksalan, the man who also created Frankenstein's monster.

- The Frankenstein make-up in the film was so close to the 1930s Universal design that it could easily have caused a lawsuit, so Paul Naschy renamed the Monster "Farancksalan", a change that fooled very few people.
- Paul Naschy said Hollywood actor Robert Taylor volunteered to play the lead alien, but the producer hired Michael Rennie for the part instead.
- Director Hugo Fregonese quit the project two-thirds of the way through, and Tulio Demicheli stepped in to finish the film; only Demicheli was credited on the prints.
- Producer Prades' financial difficulties interrupted filming several times, so the script was not shot as written, and whole segments with flying saucers and a Golem were dropped for lack of funds.
- Maria Perschy was supposed to play the part of Maleva Kerstein, but Karin Dor wound up getting the role instead.
