Antonio Mayans
Biography
Antonio Mayans is a Spanish actor and dubbing director who has also worked as a production manager. Born in Valencia, he entered film through the American producer Samuel Bronston, hired as a stuntman for John Paul Jones (1959) and then given his first speaking part in King of Kings (1961), after which he trained under the expatriate teacher William Layton. He became a character actor in Spanish genre cinema and, from Night of the Skull in 1972, collaborated repeatedly with Jesús Franco, taking over Franco's private eye Alfredo Pereira and playing the son of Dr. Orloff in The Sinister Dr. Orloff (1982). He also appeared in films by Paul Naschy and, as the Spanish B-movie industry declined in the 1990s, worked largely in television. In 2023 he drew new attention with I'll Crush Y'all, and he finished Franco's final film, Revenge of the Alligator Ladies, after the director's death.

First role
Mayans learned that John Paul Jones (1959) was being shot in Dénia, and his unusually good English for the time got him hired as a stuntman. He then became a translator linking director John Farrow with the Spanish cast.
First role
Two years after he was brought back, Mayans appeared in King of Kings (1961), speaking for the first time as a young John the Evangelist. That exposure convinced him to pursue acting full time.
About the name
French company Eurociné gave Mayans the anglophone alias Robert Foster, a near homonym of American actor Robert Forster, and the racier titles he appeared in were sometimes mixed up with the American's filmography.
Beyond film
Mayans took part in several stage productions, even though film and television made up most of his work. Among them were the national classic Life is a Dream and the first Spanish presentation of Hair.
