Plot summary
Luisa Llorente works appraising the contents of old buildings, and the Valdemar mansion, empty for more than a century and a half, is her current assignment. The company handling the appraisal had sent another appraiser before, who vanished amid suspicions of robbery. Maximilian, who runs the firm, brings in the detective Nicolás Tremel and Dr. Cerviá, head of the Valdemar foundation, because Luisa's mother is growing anxious. Santiago and Ana, two more employees, head for the estate as well. Aboard the train, Cerviá tells Nicolás the house's history: Lázaro Valdemar, a photographer, gained entry to high society by promising wealthy clients photographs of the spirits of their dead, and Leonor, his wife, who runs a private orphanage, welcomes the money they need to adopt a child.
