Nick Tate
Biography
Nick Tate is an Australian actor who works across film, television, stage and voice performance. Born in Sydney in 1942 to actor parents, he started at the Australian Broadcasting Commission and rose from studio hand to assistant director before playing a lead in the thriller miniseries The Purple Jacaranda. A lead in My Brother Jack brought his big break, and he toured for eighteen months in the musical The Canterbury Tales. He is known for playing pilot Alan Carter in Space: 1999 from 1975 to 1977. His film breakthrough came with an AACTA-winning part in The Devil's Playground (1977), and he had supporting roles in The Year My Voice Broke (1987) and Cry Freedom. He appeared in Sons and Daughters and made guest turns on The X-Files, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Farscape and Lost. His stage work includes the Australian premiere of the musical Titanic, and he has voiced Hollywood trailers, animation and video games.

First role
As a child, Tate performed in every school play, which led the Sydney Opera Company to recruit him for the title role in Menotti's opera Amahl and the Night Visitors.
Beyond film
Tate's stage work included the musical The Canterbury Tales, where he was cast as 'Nicholas the Gallant'. He stayed in that part for eighteen months while the production toured throughout the country.
A role that slipped away
Plans were made to replace Tate's character Alan Carter for the second series of Space: 1999, but fan mail showed he was among the show's most popular characters, so he stayed to the end of its run.
A change of course
Tate joined the Australian commandos for a year after joining an actors' workshop in 1964, unsure of which direction to take.
