Zienia Merton
Biography
Zienia Merton was a British actress born in Burma and raised in Singapore, Portugal and England. Educated at the Arts Educational school in Hertfordshire, she first appeared on stage as a dancer in a 1957 Royal Festival Hall production of The Nutcracker. Her first significant science fiction credit came as Ping-Cho in the 1964 Doctor Who serial Marco Polo. Early television work included Strange Report, The Six Wives of Henry VIII and Jason King, and she starred as Christina in Dennis Potter's 1971 Casanova. She played Ting Ling in The Chairman (1969) with Gregory Peck and appeared in Help! (1965). Merton was best known for Sandra Benes in Space: 1999, made by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, and she played the role again in the 1999 short Message from Moonbase Alpha. Later credits included Bergerac, Tenko, Lovejoy, EastEnders, The Bill and The Sarah Jane Adventures.
