Plot summary
The Works is a guild of thieves that takes valuable objects from rich owners, and Lupin the 3rd, the grandson of Arsène Lupin, is one of its members. In Singapore he takes an ancient Olympic medal ahead of his fellow members Fujiko Mine, Pierre and Jiro, then gives it up when his rival Michael Lee threatens him and Fujiko. At a guild meeting, Thomas Dawson, who leads The Works and mentors Lupin, shows the members the Crimson Heart of Cleopatra, a necklace Mark Antony ordered as a gift for the queen of Egypt; the ruby meant to complete it is missing. Michael's associates steal the necklace, and The Works breaks apart. Lupin, Fujiko, Pierre and Daisuke Jigen then set out after Michael.

- In 2009, ex-astronaut Buzz Aldrin sued WhiteLight Entertainment and Guardian Pictures for breach of contract and fraud, saying he had invested $200,000 in films that were never produced, including Lupin III.
- Director Ryuhei Kitamura said creative tensions with producer and co-writer Mataichirō Yamamoto were high during development, with Yamamoto considering dropping Lupin III's comedic elements, and that it was hard to keep Lupin rather than the newly invented Michael Lee as the protagonist.
- Ryuhei Kitamura and Mataichirō Yamamoto spent three or four months reading the manga and watching the anime before deciding their film would be an origin story, and weighed ideas such as a "cursed diamond from the Smithsonian" and an "ancient Soviet tank" as the MacGuffin.
