Plot summary
In 1927, Rose is a deaf girl in New Jersey whose scrapbook chronicles the career of the actress Lillian Mayhew. Lillian Mayhew is both the star Rose admires and the mother she is looking for, and Rose leaves her father's house to find her. Fifty years later, in 1977, Ben is a recently orphaned boy who lost his hearing in an accident, and he leaves his home in Minnesota to look for his father. The film switches frequently between the two children and their separate journeys. Rose's search takes her to New York, and the 1927 scenes are in black and white.

- Millicent Simmonds, a deaf actor from Utah, won her role after director Todd Haynes told casting director Laura Rosenthal to scour deaf communities around the country; 200 deaf children sent in audition tapes, and the fallback was casting a hearing child.
- Haynes filmed the 1927 scenes in black and white on 35-negative anamorphic, deliberately not the aspect ratio of silent films, with a near-continuous musical soundtrack and design touches he called "not naturalistic or literal."
- The 1977 scenes were shot with color-negative film matched to the visual language of 1970s cinema, with "a gritty urban color" like that of Midnight Cowboy (1969) and The French Connection (1971).
