Morgan Wallace
Biography
Morgan Wallace was an American actor whose screen credits numbered over 120 films spanning 1914 to 1946, but he began on the stage. Born in Lompoc, California, he toured with a Shakespearean repertory company before forming his own troupe, The Morgan Wallace Players, in Bangor, Maine, in 1903. After early silent films from 1914, he left movies in 1924 to focus on theater, then returned in 1930 when studios hired stage-trained actors for talkies. He became a reliable character player, often cast as upstanding citizens, prosperous businessmen, and urbane villains. He was among the founders of the Screen Actors Guild in 1933. He was best known for the W.C. Fields comedy It's a Gift (1934) and for playing a sinister menace in Charlie Chan at the Olympics (1936). His later films included I'll Remember April (1945) and The Falcon's Alibi (1946), and he retired after a Broadway role in Loco in 1946.

Did you know?!
Early training
Before organizing his own stock company, The Morgan Wallace Players, in Bangor, Maine, in 1903, Wallace toured with a Shakespearean repertory company.
First role
Morgan Wallace said his first film credit was Dream Street, a silent feature by D. W. Griffith from 1921. Yet he had been in silent films since 1914, among them a couple of Charlie Chaplin comedies shot at Keystone.
Big break
Hollywood studios hired Wallace, who had trained on the stage, for the new talking pictures. In 1930 he started a second movie career that was much more successful.
A change of course
Morgan Wallace never signed a long-term contract with one studio. His standing in the actors' union may have kept studios from offering him steady work, but his skill as a character actor was undeniable, so he freelanced for most Hollywood studios.
Beyond film
Morgan Wallace went back to Broadway in 1946, taking a featured part in the new comedy Loco opposite screen actress Jean Parker. The play's run lasted exactly one month that late fall.
