Plot summary
Harold Bissonette says his surname is bis-on-ay; his wife Amelia says it another way. A blind shopper, Mr. Muckle, and the baby of another customer spread damage through the aisles of his grocery store, and his employee Everett Ricks is not much help. An inheritance gives Harold a way out: he buys an orange grove in California on the strength of a brochure and announces that the family will move west. Amelia and the children, Mildred and Norman, object, and they do not share his faith in the purchase. Harold packs the car anyway and drives off to California with the family and the brochure.

- It's a Gift reprises routines W.C. Fields had honed on stage between 1915 and 1925, among them the sketches "The Picnic" and "A Joy Ride" and, most famously, "The Back Porch", which he carried over from his stage career into film.
