Plot summary

Father O'Herlihy is the senior priest at the parish where Billy Smoortser serves as a junior one, and Billy's habit of telling the congregation stories with no religious or moral point has worn his patience thin. He orders Billy to take a vacation and think about his calling as a priest. Billy arranges a river trip by canoe with Robbie Shoemaker, whom he recently reconnected with by email. Robbie dated Janice, Billy's older sister, in high school and was Billy's idol then: a death metal band member who also wrote, and Billy tells Robbie's stories to his parishioners. Billy wants the trip to recreate their teenage years, when Robbie was the cool kid and Billy the dork.
