Plot summary
Agnes is in the last stage of uterine cancer, cared for in a mansion whose walls and carpets are red. Her sisters Maria and Karin, both married and living elsewhere, come back to their childhood home and share the watch at her bedside with Anna, the household maid. Neither sister draws close. Karin is bound to an unhappy marriage with Fredrik, and Maria, who is absorbed by her own beauty, is visited at the house by her former lover David, Agnes's doctor. Anna, who lost her own small daughter, prays and stays near, and it is Anna whom Agnes calls for when the pain comes.
