Biography

Erland Josephson was a Swedish actor who began working with Ingmar Bergman in the theater in the late 1930s. Born in Stockholm, he spent the early part of his career mainly on stage, though he appeared in several films in the late 1940s and early 1950s. His screen work with Bergman included The Magician (1958), Hour of the Wolf (1968), The Passion of Anna (1969), Cries and Whispers (1972), Face to Face (1976), Autumn Sonata (1978), and Saraband (2003). In the 1970s he became Bergman's favorite male lead and gained global fame. He also appeared in Andrei Tarkovsky's Nostalghia (1983) and The Sacrifice (1986), and in international films such as The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988) and Prospero's Books (1991). Josephson co-wrote two screenplays with Bergman, headed Stockholm's Royal Dramatic Theatre as creative director from 1966 to 1975, co-directed One and One (1978), directed Marmalade Revolution (1980), and wrote dramas, novels, and poetry. He died in 2012.
