Biography

Josephine Crowell was a Canadian actress of the silent era who began in the theater in 1879 and later played Mrs. Pitcher in the Broadway production Captain Mollhy (1902). She started film acting in The School Teacher and the Waif in 1912. By 1919 she had made 50 films, many of them shorts, and she became known for roles in early D.W. Griffith works, playing Mrs. Cameron in The Birth of a Nation (1915) and Catherine de' Medici in Intolerance (1916). In 1920 she and Gladys Brockwell appeared in Flames of the Flesh, followed by six more film appearances that year. From 1921 to 1929 she had 34 further appearances, among them Hot Water (1924), as Harold Lloyd's mother-in-law, and The Splendid Crime (1925) with Bebe Daniels. She also performed in vaudeville. Her final role was in Wrong Again (1929), with Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, before sound films ended her career. Crowell died in 1932.
