Plot summary
Milan arrives alone by train in a small French town, a headache driving him into the pharmacy for aspirin. There he meets Manesquier, a cultured bachelor who lives by himself in a large house. The only hotel in town has closed, so Manesquier offers the stranger a room for the night. Manesquier is happy to talk about his life and interests, while Milan keeps quiet about who he is and why he came; he is waiting to join three other criminals in robbing the town bank. In the days that follow, the two men keep each other's company, Manesquier sharing his music and poetry and Milan teaching him to be tougher.
