Plot summary
Charlie Cox, a divorced writer from Los Angeles, is driving home from a cross country vacation with his daughter Joleen when their car runs out of gas in Banco, a small town in the Nevada desert, on the day before Joleen's fourteenth birthday. The gas station owned by Duckett has no fuel and none is expected for days. In the local supermarket Joleen sees the body of the owner, Ferrell Hovis, and Sheriff Bill Childers says the killer is most likely a drifter. Charlie and Joleen check into the Palomino Guest Ranch and Trailer Park, run by Agnes Reed, and there Joleen meets Agnes's son Jimmy, a shy teenager named Pinky Sears, and two fellow travelers, Louise and Amy.
