Trailer

Plot summary

A white prostitute in Havana gives birth to Drum and brings him up with her black woman lover. He grows into a fighter, made to box other slaves bare-knuckled to the edge of death for the amusement of the men who own them. One of those owners, the Frenchman Bernard DeMarigny, wants him, and swears revenge when Drum refuses him. Drum and his friend Blaise are then sold to Hammond Maxwell, a Louisiana planter, and taken to his plantation. Maxwell buys Regine too and puts her in the bedroom above his own. His fiancee Augusta and his daughter Sophie live there as well.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Burt Kennedy was replaced as director by Steve Carver after creative differences with executive producer Dino De Laurentiis, leaving Carver only four days to prepare, and the finished print mixed footage shot by both men. Kennedy had shot only the opening sequence in Puerto Rico before walking off, embarrassed by the script.
  • When Burt Kennedy left the production, a lot of the actors walked off with him, forcing new director Steve Carver to recast several roles and bring in Pam Grier, Royal Dano and Brenda Sykes.
  • Paramount Pictures backed out of distributing the film because it thought producer Dino De Laurentis had made it X-rated. He settled for a "slightly laundered version" and pitched it to United Artists, which took over distribution.
