Lorne Greene
Biography
Lorne Greene was a Canadian actor, singer, and radio broadcaster who began in news before becoming a television patriarch. Born in Ottawa in 1915, he acted at Queen's University and later studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre. After moving to Toronto in 1939, he read news for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and founded the Lorne Greene Academy of Radio Arts, which trained future broadcasters until he closed it in 1952. He then moved to the United States, where Katharine Cornell cast him on Broadway in 1953. His Hollywood debut came as Saint Peter in The Silver Chalice (1954), and he played a prosecutor in Peyton Place (1957). Greene became a household name as Ben Cartwright in Bonanza from 1959 to 1973. He later played Commander Adama in Battlestar Galactica and Galactica 1980, recorded country and folk albums, and appeared in The Canadian Conspiracy (1986). He received the Order of Canada and a Hollywood Walk of Fame star.

Behind the camera
In Toronto in 1945, Lorne Greene started the Lorne Greene Academy of Radio Arts and acted as its dean. Among those it trained were actors and broadcasters Leslie Nielsen and James Doohan, and in seven years 381 students graduated.
Big break
Greene's first continuing TV role was Ben Cartwright, the patriarch on Bonanza, the first one-hour Western filmed in color. He got the part after playing O'Brien in the CBS production of Nineteen Eighty-Four.
Beyond film
In 1964, Greene's spoken-word ballad "Ringo" reached number one on the music charts. The song was about Johnny Ringo, the real-life Old West outlaw.
A first
Greene received the unofficial title "The Voice of Canada" for his CBC newsreading, but his delivery of distressing war news earned him the alternate nickname "The Voice of Doom."
