Plot summary
Captain Alex Foster, a British Army intelligence officer in Libya in 1942, has himself taken prisoner by a German Afrika Korps convoy that is carrying captured British soldiers while pretending to be hurt. The prisoners include a medical unit with a Quaker conscientious objector and the remnants of a commando force. Foster lays out his plan for them: take over the convoy and steer it toward the port of Tobruk. Vivianne, once the companion of an Italian general, is named on the convoy's letters of transport and is held there unwillingly. On the road the group comes upon far more German tanks than expected, and takes it as a sign that a fuel depot lies close by.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Raid on Rommel (1971)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Raid on Rommel began as an NBC made-for-television film meant to reuse footage from Tobruk (1967), with Robert Stack intended for the lead; when it was retooled as a theatrical picture, Stack was replaced by Richard Burton for added marquee value.
- Director Henry Hathaway said he took the job because it looked like fun, shot the film in twenty days, and said Richard Burton never drank during the shoot although Elizabeth Taylor, who joined him, did.
- To match the action footage reused from Tobruk, Richard Burton had to dye his hair blond so that he would match George Peppard in the earlier film.
