Plot summary
Earl Keese is a straight-laced man living in a suburban neighborhood with Enid, his dismissive wife. Charming, chaotic Vic and sultry Ramona move into the abandoned house next door. The Zecks impose themselves on the Keese household. Vic's fast talk overwhelms Earl, and Ramona's advances fluster him. Vic cons Earl out of cash and the use of his car, supposedly to collect takeaway food, and makes pasta at home instead.

- John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd switched roles before shooting, playing against type: the usually wild Belushi took the meek Earl Keese, while the normally straight Aykroyd played the obnoxious Vic Zeck.
- John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd argued constantly with director John G. Avildsen, believing he had no understanding of comedy, and lobbied to have him removed; Belushi wanted Aykroyd, himself or John Landis to direct.
- Upset with John Belushi's antics and believing Fear's music was inappropriate for Neighbors, the studio forced the punk band off the soundtrack; Belushi got them a guest spot on Saturday Night Live instead.
- For one test version of Neighbors, Columbia Pictures head Frank Price had quotations from positive reviews of Thomas Berger's novel made into a prologue caption, which prompted an angry missive from Dan Aykroyd.
- John Belushi's drug problems impaired the production of Neighbors, which proved to be his final film before he died of a drug overdose.
- Tom Scott was originally assigned to compose the score for Neighbors but was replaced by Avildsen's frequent collaborator Bill Conti.
