Joanna Kerns
Biography
The American actress and director Joanna Kerns began her career as a dancer and later moved into acting. Born in San Francisco, she studied dance at UCLA and left college to join Gene Kelly's production Clown Around in New York, where she also appeared in New York Shakespeare Festival stagings of Two Gentlemen of Verona and Ulysses in Nighttown. Back in California from 1972, she danced at Disneyland and took guest parts on many television series across the late 1970s and early 1980s. Her first steady role came in 1983 on the CBS series The Four Seasons, and from 1985 to 1992 she played Maggie Seaver on the ABC sitcom Growing Pains, reprising it in two reunion television movies. Her feature films include Girl, Interrupted (1999) and Knocked Up (2007). She moved into directing, helming episodes of numerous television series.
