Plot summary
Eli Wyckoff and Tom are introduced by their friends Jackie and Brett, who believe the two men would make a good couple. Tom grew up with cold, alcoholic parents and avoids closeness, while Eli's parents, both Jewish psychiatrists, encouraged emotional openness but left him neurotic. Both men want to find the one yet fail to see it in each other. Their arranged evening is dull except for Tom's rant about a film. Days later they meet at a flea market and connect; Tom stays the night at Eli's home, but the next morning he calls it a mistake. Jackie and Brett continue to push them together, though Tom's fear of closeness and Eli's insecurities make developing a relationship difficult.
