Jerry Desmonde
Biography
Jerry Desmonde was an English actor and presenter, born in the Linthorpe district of Middlesbrough as James Robert Sadler to music hall performers. He first appeared on stage at eleven and later performed with his family's act, The Four Sadlers. He became a song and dance man in musical theater, and in 1927 and 1928 toured parts of the United States with Beatrice Lillie and Noel Coward in a two-act revue. In 1942 he became the straight man for stage comedian Sid Field, and they formed a celebrated comedy partnership. Together they appeared in the revues Strike a New Note, Strike it Again, and Piccadilly Hayride, and in the films London Town (1946) and Cardboard Cavalier (1949). Desmonde was also a television presenter and panelist, and an occasional guest host on What's My Line? from 1951 to 1962. He acted in numerous movies from 1946 to 1965, often as an authority figure opposing Norman Wisdom's characters.
