Plot summary
With the Civil War in its final days, the Confederacy is short of men in its western territory. Five prisoners waiting to be hanged are offered pardons if they join the army and ride out to catch a turncoat and bring back a stolen gold shipment carried on an unscheduled stagecoach. Govern Sturges ends up leading the group, which avoids an Indian war party on the way. They reach a former mining town deserted except for Shalee Jethro and her uncle, the stagecoach agent, and take the two of them captive. While the men wait for the coach to appear, they fall to arguing over Shalee, and Sturges steps in for her.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Five Guns West (1955)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Roger Corman's first day directing Five Guns West was rained out, and he was so tense about falling behind that he pulled off the road and threw up. He waited about an hour at Iverson's before the rain stopped.
- Corman went over budget on Five Guns West and, being responsible for all overages under his deal with ARC, took money from the budget of his upcoming science fiction film The Unseen (later The Beast with a Million Eyes), leaving under $30,000 to make that one.
- Before starting Five Guns West, Corman shot an 8-minute short film on 16 mm over one day with some actor friends to get practice, but never bothered having it processed and edited.
- Because single B-pictures such as Five Guns West played the bottom of twin bills at $25 per booking, Alex Gordon said AIP would have to own both pictures to obtain percentage bookings, which pushed the company into releasing films as double-bill packages.
