Plot summary
At a 1940 Navy Board of Inquiry, Chief Gunner's Mate Mike Mallory's testimony about a fatal gun turret accident ends the career of Lieutenant Tom Sands. Myra is Mallory's sister, and she and Sands love each other, but Sands resigns his commission and tells her they have no future together. After the United States enters the war he returns to the Navy in the enlisted ranks, and chance places him under Mallory's command, to the displeasure of both. Their crew is posted to the freighter Sybil Gray to serve its guns. Myra, a Navy nurse sailing in the same convoy, comes to see her brother off and meets Sands again. On board, Coxswain G. Berringer knows him, and the other sailors shun him.
