Plot summary
Chuck Scott is a World War II veteran with no money, drifting in Miami and troubled by strange dreams. He finds a wallet and returns it to Eddie Roman, a gangster, who offers him work as a chauffeur. Roman tests his new driver by seizing control of the car from the back seat, where a hidden accelerator lets him dictate the speed, a trick that rattles both Chuck and Gino, Roman's right-hand man. Roman is violent with rivals and domineering toward his wife, Lorna. Each night she takes a drive, and at last she proposes that Chuck take her to Cuba, offering him a thousand dollars. Chuck accepts, and he understands that he has fallen in love with her.

- To satisfy the Production Code, much of the action was framed as a dream sequence so the characters could escape the consequences of their actions, a death in Cornell Woolrich's book was changed from a mad dog attack to an auto accident, and the Cuba scenes were adjusted to avoid upsetting the Cuban government.
- Production was also held up by an electrical workers' strike at RKO's Culver City studio, according to a report in Variety.
