Biography

Max Adrian was an Irish actor and singer who helped found both the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company. He started out singing and dancing in a chorus at a silent picture house, and 1925 brought his first stage work, a chorus part in Katja the Dancer; he reached the West End two years later in The Squall. Wider attention came in 1938 with Pandarus in Troilus and Cressida and Sir Ralph Bloomfield Bonnington in The Doctor's Dilemma. He went on to the Old Vic and to John Gielgud's company, and his revues at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, ran to more than 2,000 performances. In 1956 he played Dr. Pangloss and Martin in Leonard Bernstein's Candide on Broadway. Later screen roles included The Deadly Affair (1967) and Ken Russell's The Music Lovers (1971), The Boy Friend (1971) and The Devils (1971), and he was the composer Frederick Delius in the television film Song of Summer.
