Plot summary
Henri Boulanger has worked fifteen years in an office at the London waterworks. The business is to be privatized, and he is laid off at once, with foreigners the first to be dismissed. With no job and no friends, he decides to take his own life, but hanging and the gas oven both fail. In a newspaper he reads of contract killers, pawns his watch and arranges at the Honolulu Bar for one to do the job within two weeks, telling the men he will not change his mind. Bored of waiting at home, he leaves a note on his door and crosses to the pub, where he strikes up a conversation with Margaret, who sells flowers there.
