Plot summary
Django guards a gold transport that is attacked by men working for David Barry, who wants the gold to pay for a career in politics. Django is wounded in the raid and his wife is killed. He lets the world believe he is dead and takes a post as hangman under a political boss whose conspiracies put innocent landowners on the gallows so that their land falls to him. The condemned men are not hanged at all; the rope is a show. Django hides them and gathers them into a gang, planning to use the men he has saved against the perjurers who swore their lives away.
