Plot summary
Jean Reynaud is a wealthy industrialist in Paris. He has married Danielle, but she refuses him now. In revenge, he lets a host's wife seduce him at a party. In the same building, a woman takes the flat above the couple, and from time to time they hear a lover who abuses her, rebuking her and beating her. Jean offers her his protection, moved at once by chivalry and by desire, and soon the two become lovers. Her name is Nicole Perrier, and the violent ex she mentions is Klaus. Nicole warns Jean that Klaus will seek to kill him.
