Plot summary
Walter Zarrow, a Columbia University philosophy professor, is wounded in a mugging. He rings door buzzers at random and wakes Sam, who answers his pleas; Zarrow then loses consciousness in Sam's arms. The crime reaches into other lives across New York City: a housewife who struggles with alcohol, a teenage stoner who wants to lose his virginity, a failed writer fighting addiction, two parents facing a terminal illness, and a graduate student who harms herself to feel alive. An addict, Joe, is part of the same tangle.
